1. Easy answer - go to your local electrical store. I think you're based in the UK - all the big ones like Dixons, Comet & PC World plus smaller stores like Richer Sounds and local independents have HD screens on display. Be aware that they don't always show HD content on the screens. I know for independent stores some manufacturers supply them with HD demos to show off the full potential and some of them don't so they just put on a normal DVD for thier screens. You will be able to tell the difference, though!
