Could anyone recommend a good Hard Drive High Definition Camcorder in the $800 range?

I've read reviews on the Sony, JVC and Canon in this price range, and many people are commenting on a new video format that they are using that isn't compatible with a lot of editing software. I would like to be able to edit videos easily, so I'm not sure which would work the best for me. Thanks for your help!! By the way, I have Vista so I'd probably be using the editing software that it has???
