What software is best/user friendly for digital video editing on a PC?

I am looking to make home made music videos with my band, shorts, and compiling home videos of my 1 year old daughter put to music. I am shooting on a HDR-SR11 60GB High Definition Handycam® Camcorder Sony. I have Windows XP on my Computer. Computer is less than two years old.

1. Windows Movie Maker is the free choice for video editing but isn't very good software. It constantly closes when your in the middle of something for no reason. CNET give's it a 1 star rating and doesn't recommend it for any user.
