Does a Component Cable transmit High Definition Video?

Hi, I just recently bought a HDTV. I want to be able to watch my DVDs at a higher resolution than with standard RCA cables. Is the Component cable, (Y, Pb, Pr) signal from my DVD player to my HDTV in 480p high definintion? Or do I require a DVD player with HDMI to send a 480p signal to my TV? I already know that a standard DVD can transmit 480p without upscaling. Basically, is the the component cable a high definition cable? I want a confirmation because the Wii HD cable looks like it uses Component, but the PS3 uses HDMI. I own both and want to make sure they are HD, as well as my DVDs.

  1. In a sense yes and no, it has the capability to transmit HD over the component cable however the cable itself is analog. HD quality isnt necessarily always digital as it can be run over a component cable (analog) For the better quality image definitely always use a HDMI cable (as on the PS3) as it supports 1080p whereas component does not
  2. Your component cable is ok to watch DVDs in 480p.It is a HD cable. But the HDMI cable allows you to receive 1080P if your TV can handle that res.For the Ps3 I use HDMI because of it's upconverting abilities
  3. While component cables do support high definition for the wii, it will only go as high as 480p which while progressive scan isn't high def. Also component cables can support 1080p as they already support 1080i which is the same exact resolution but just conveyed different. 1920x1080 is the resolution 1080i and 1080p run at, 1080 being interlaced and 1080p being progressive. The thing is that most tvs especially newer models won't accept 1080p via component not because its analog but to prevent the pirating of hd signals.Trust me I tried, I hae digital cable and connected my cable box to my lcd via hdmi and connected it also to my rv runer card via component, the cable box won't convey a message to the component while hdmi is connected. So yes component is hd, but only for gaming systems that can output high def, so 360 and ps3 yes, 720p,1080i and even 1080p via component is possible, for dvds you will need hdmi to upscale, and the wii isnt high def, sorry.
  4. Both HDMI and COMPONENT CABLES transfer the signal to the TV in HD mode, but your DVD player/discs will only put out the signal as 480....That's a Low Definition Resolution. The BLU-RAY and HD-DVD discs, along with it's respective PLAYER are the TRUE HD setups nowadays...and they'll play your old DVDs too, with amazing clarity ! I hope you understand, the SOURCE determines what signal is produced and SENT via the HD cabling you choose.... So a standard DVD delivers 480P low def, while a PS3 game MIGHT be an HD game, or a DVD MIGHT be an HD-DVD and it DELIVERS an HD picture to the TV.... It's all about the SOURCE of video you deliver to it, not the type of HD cabling you use...
