What Are These So-Called DVD Player High Definition Upgrades?

On ebay you can but this dvd player that claim to play regular dvd movie in high defintion, I think? When a movie is on a disk at 480 lines of resolution, you should not be able to make it go up to 1080 lines of high definition? The extra lines aren't there to begin with. For example if you copy and old vhs tape with 250 lines of resolution to a dvd, that is all you are going to get is a 250 lines transfer, the taped movie is not going to get sharper. So what is this talk about High Definition on Regular DVD's?

  1. Sounds like fraud to me. Someone is trying to sell you something that is nonexistant just to make a buck. Don't buy it!
  2. You cannot make the source code (regular DVD) something it is not -- true HD. But that doesn't mean you can't buy a DVD player that improves the picture. There are some DVDs that "upconvert" the signal to 1080i or 720p. This means using a HDMI or a DVI cable from your DVD player. This means you need an HDTV. Three observations: Not all DVDs are created equal. Some employed greater compression than others -- those with less compression tend to up convert better. Second, the player/tv combination seems to matter. The players are not created equal. Third, while better (some think much much better), this is still not HD. For that you need blu-ray or HDVD.
