Question about the high definition tv and compatible equipment?

My dad wanted to know if the VCR and the DVD player he has now should work with the High Definition TV when things change next year? He noticed that the VCR's and DVD players in the local stores are being removed and replaced with DVD players that cost about 2 to 3 times more than what we have now.

1. HD TV's will display SD (standard definition) programs with no problems. They won't look like HD, they'll still be SD but they will play on the TV.
