  1. well, usually the movie pros use light filters to change the way things look. Depending on the situation, it could make it darker for a scary scene or brighter for a nice beach scene. There are lots of different things like this, although i dont know if they are available for consumers.
  2. A lot of Hollywood movies are shot on film and that gives them a very warm and rich look. Digital Hi-Def movies are shot at 24 frames per second (versus 30 on your camera.) This also has an impact on the style that come out in the end. Most of all, everything that is shown on television or as a feature movie, goes through an extensive amount of color correcting and image manipulation. If you have DVDs at home, watch some of the outtakes or deleted scenes. Often these won't have the work done on them and you can see how close the raw footage is to yours. Also, lighting is more important to your image quality than the quality of your camera. Poor lighting will look awful on a great camera and a cheap camera can look good with some savvy lighting. As for software, there are a variety of routes and you can spend a couple hundred to thousands of dollars. Apple has a program called, "Color." It's fantastic, but the learning curve is steep. A lot of these tools are only as good as the people using them but everyone started somewhere, so experiment. I suggest start playing with color temperature and saturation.
