  1. you can play normal dvds in high definition because it will do it automatically by upscaling it on your hd dvd player. a hddvd player is meant for only hddvds, they are discs that are 15 gigabytes big which store high definition content, but now they have been discontinued because of no sales. The difference between blu ray and hddvd is that the bluray disc is actually 50 gigabytes in size! that means it can hold up to 3 times the video length and have extra sound tracks in other languages for other than English speaking audiences.
  2. HD-DVD is dead. You can play normal DVD on both an HD-DVD player and a Blu Ray player, but they will be normal quality video/sound. For High Def Veiwing you need to get either HD-DVD movies or Blu-Ray movies and play them on their respective players. Blu-Ray is more efficient at "Multi-layering" than HD-DVD, so a Standard HD-DVD can store up to 30GB of data, whereas a "multi-layer" Blu-Ray disc can store up to 500GB of data. The answer above mine is a lie. Holofoil is the next Format, with concept models made holding up to 1.3 Exobytes (XB) [ 1,300,000 GB]
  3. Your new HD DVD player will upscale your DVD to 1080p (full HD), but the quality may not be 'the' best as compared to HD DVD. Blu Ray and HD-DVD are different formats (like different languages), and HD DVD is no longer made becoz the parent company (Toshiba) decided to suspend the format.
