Why does the volume increase on my tv when commercials are on?
I have to reduce the volume on my television whenever commercials come on. Is there a tv setting to correct the volume control. Thanks

- The audio for TV programming (the shows) is modulated to be some average audio level. And, this usually includes a wide frequency spectrum that is close to the range of human hearing (20 Hz to 20 kHz). But, the commercials are recorded to have less low frequencies in the signal or equalized to increase the midrange. Reproducing a low-frequency audio signal requires a lot more power than reproducing mid or high frequency audio signals. So, when they modulate the commercial audio to the same power level (per NTSC specifications), the audio level of the commercial audio ends up sounding a lot louder coming through your TV or sound system than the programming audio. They do this when they produce commercials to make the audio a lot louder when they come on. Psychologically, this will make you pay more attention to the commercial, because you notice the audio change. Or, if you fell asleep in front of the TV, this may cause you to be startled awake, but now you're watching the commercial.
- Many newer tv's have a smart sound setting which will even out the volume on your tv. Check the owner's manual for this feature. Be advised these smart sound features only work on the tv's speakers, not on the line outs (including fiber optic) you may be feeding to a receiver.
- the conspiracy theorist in says its because the advertisers want you to hear about their products while you leave the room for a bathroom or snack break
