How do you make the resolution on your tv the same as your laptop when you connect the two using s-video?

I want to connect my computer to my tv using an s-video to s-video cable, but when I connect the two the resolution on the tv is awful. However as I decrease the resolution on my laptop the resolution increases on the tv. When I close the lid of my laptop, my tv shows the resolution on my laptop so I know that the tv is capable of the resolution of my laptop. Does anyone know how to make the resolution on my tv the resolution of my laptop(1440 by 900)? Thanks a million.

1. You can't. The TV is fixed. You have to put your laptop to the same resolution as the TV.
