How do you hook up a tv to a laptop to watch a movie with a s-cable?

I hooked up my laptop to my tv using a s-cable. Now mybackground shows up on the tv but when I drag the movie player over to the tv it is blank, it wont play. How do I fix this?

1. If it's only showing up blank on the tv, there's a problem with your graphics card. If it's also showing up blank you your laptop, it's either your media player or your file. In the worst case scenario it might be your graphics card too.
