A question about Indian Television serials?

I want to know how much the Indian Mega Serials (particularly in Tamil/Teleugu) are useful in your day to day life? I am NOT asking about the "talk shows" but I am asking only about the Serials, which I feel horrible for me without any social message. I feel pity particularly on the ladies who became somewhat ""addicted"" to these serials. Even the office going ladies, who, a decade ago, sharing their family problems, neighbourhood menace, etc with others and used to find a solution, nowadays, discuss amongst them only about these serials, about the costumes, jewellery, etc used by the female actors and discussing what would happen in the next episode etc. It is PERTINENT to mention here that a survey conducted recently in Chennai has revealed that the populace, particularly the ladies addicted to watching these "social dramas" are vulnerable to diabetes, blood pressure, etc and are least bothered to look after their children, about their future, their husband's health care, etc. ONE LADY HAS EVEN FORGOTTEN HER GRAND DAUGHTER'S NAME BUT SHE NARRATTED ALL THE CHARACTERS" NAMES IN A PARTICULAR SERIAL ! ! ! May I know the views of our learned members of Y/A on this aspect??? If anybody has overcome this "addict", they can share their experiences with our other members.

  1. I once got struck up with a serial which lasted for more than a year with out any meaning. Now I decided not to watch serials.
  2. It is true that these serials get people addicted to them. This is the situation all over the world ,not only in India.
  3. Idiot box has made many idiots in the form of sickening, hard to digest, stereotyped, never ending serials targeting house wives. The hospitality of Tamils to visitors/guests was second to none once. Now visitors are unwelcome during serial time.If some one turns up to hand over wedding card, the host only reduces the volume but watches and at the same time inquires about the alliance. some years back there was a tremor in Chennai during Sun News at 8 pm.All ran out of the house to escape. But they returned to watch 'Chitthiiiiiiiii' serial without bothering about their lives. Even during any special pooja at home conducted by purohiders, the serial will be on and the height of it is purohiders, chanting mantras and commenting about some scenes. Once I was returning to Chennai from Mumbai. The train, supposed to reach 6 pm was delayed three hours. There was a middle aged woman so restless not for the train delay but for that she could not watch a serial at 8.30 pm. In T.nagar,Chennai, one family lost their Fridge because they were so engrossed with the serial some thieves looted it with the help of passers-by. I used to come home during 'Chitthiiiiiiiii' serial, there would not be any response from my family, all glued to sofa. I told my kids that if you people were so lost then one day you would see a real 'Chitthiiiiiiiii' (having a set up). For me all serials look same.I do not know why all actors are standing always.Even back ground music resemble one another. Really it is a curse to Tamil Nadu to have so many not so worthy serials.Things should change.
  4. Serial watching is a type of time-management disease. All those who are addicted to it don't have better things to do in the evening. It is tailor made to be appreciated by the dumb mass.
  5. Friend Some time back Pad sir has asked a similar question and got one very good answer from Veer Sir http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Avf00d6DvqLGyyJMMA6YYv3ty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20091016093337AAZjxR7 If a weeping sound is always heard in a home it is not a good omen for that home. Even on Fridays and other auspicious days these serials show death, accidents, meaningless weeping, and bring bad omen. Even the back ground music is weeping!!! These mindless serials target only housewives, old men and women, who have nothing else to do except to watch this idiot box. Even among them some knowledgeable house wives do not watch these serials. Younger generation, working men and women, do not bother about these types of programs. That’s why on Saturdays and Sundays, these serials are not telecast ed producers of these serials know very well, men and young generation do not welcome it and they introduce other programs on these weekends. Producers/ telecasters of these serials actually harm the mind of young unmarried girls. They do not feel any responsibility towards the society where they also live in, These serials portray, women as cunning; mother in laws and sister in laws are bad, No one talks in these serials without weeping for any thing and every thing. I do not think that these types of serials are welcomed in any of the advanced countries. We are lowering our women by showing the way they are portrayed. Women welfare groups should take up this issue with producers of this type of serials and bring sense in them; they can also appeal to various political parties to interfere in this matter. Young men and women must also write to Editors of Newspapers, about the harm these serials bring into every one’s home. If a movie is bad, one can avoid it by not going to that movie, but these serials come into our hall and destroy sacredness of our home. if Advertisements are stopped, funds are dried up, this type of serials will stop. Will those companies who advertise their products will send a singnal to these producers by denying advertisements to such mindless production? Only a concerted effort by younger generation and advertisers will put an end to this nonsense.
