  1. Can you? Sure. What are you planning to edit the video with? The Sony HDR-UX10 is less than $1,000. It saves video files to VERY compressed AVCHD/MTS files. It has no mic jack, so if the dialog is over about 6 feet away, the audio won't be very good. The lenses and imaging chips are small (43mm or smaller diameter), so low light behavior won't be very good. I would not wish a DVD based camcorder on anyone. If that camcorder could provide "professional results" the professionlas would be using it. They do not like spending money that does not need to be spent. The reason they use the equipment they use is because that equipment can provide the result they demand. At the entry level, that means a Sony HVR-Z1 or Canon XHA1. Even better are the Canon XLH series or Sony XDCAM series... or JVC GY-HM series or Panasonic AG-HVX series. Note that NONE of these use DVD to store video. None of them write to AVCHD/MTS files. All have XLR connectors for external mics. The Red (One or Scarlett) and Silicon Imaging systems are even more than these... The really big dogs use Panavision, CineAlta, Arri and a few others. They can't record audio - an external audio system is required for that. I would suggest you investigate the Canon HF or HF S series or SOny HDR-CX500 series flash memory camcorders if you want to stay in flash memory. Even better is the Canon HV40 miniDV tape camcorder which requires your computer to have a firewire port.
