can you use a 1080p home theatre system on a 720p high definition television?

I have a 720p samsung high definition television and a 1080p LG home theatre system and it uses an HD-MI connection cable to connect the home theatre system to the tv. After i plugged in everything and connected the woofer and Additional speakers i connected the HD-MI cable to the television and the home theatre system. When i went to the TVs menu and selected the home theatre system from the "inputs" screen the connection could not be made. I checked the cords and cables and speakers and received the same result once more. I began to believe that maybe a 720p television can't support a 1080p sound system and i went to yahoo for answers. My other question is if it can be connected, how? and if it can't what can i do to make a sufficient home theatre?

  1. can't you just use the RCA connectors?
  2. It should work, make sure the HDMI is in your home theater systems OUTPUT port, many people get confused as to where to plug in their cables. Also make sure your home theater system is set to the right device. If this doesnt work, try using component cables (red, green, blue) as it will output to 720p so you will not lose video quality
